Boan, West provide 2020 stats to county council
County Council 030221
Kershaw County Council Chairman Julian Burns (top center) admonishes Kershaw County Coroner David West (bottom center) for disparaging a S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) employee by name during a presentation on 2020 statistics during council’s Feb. 23 meeting. Councilman Russell Brazell (top, third from right) was visibly upset by and called out West for using the employee’s name. West apologized, and told the C-I on Wednesday that he apologized to the employee, who accepted the apology. West had been trying to express his frustration with DHEC over what he considers a continued miscounting of COVID-related deaths in Kershaw County, and that the employee had merely been following his superiors orders.
During Kershaw County Council’s Feb. 23 meeting, Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan and Coroner David West provided statistics from their respective department for 2020. Most of the news came as no surprise, but did include a harsh rebuke of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) by West.
