Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said he is “disappointed” by a fifth lawsuit filed against him Friday by Kershaw County Magistrate R. Eugene “Gene” Hartis. The lawsuit, which describes Hartis as “an honorable man” with an “excellent reputation” in the Kershaw County community, alleges that Matthews defamed Hartis with comments the sheriff made after taking office in January 2011. Hartis is seeking a total of $4 million; $2 million in actual damages and $2 million in punitive damages, plus the cost of court fees.
