Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews is concerned about what he believes could be an increase in gang activity in Kershaw County. The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office answered some 43,000 calls in 2016, a number of which entailed confrontational situations with armed and dangerous felons. Since January 2016, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office has arrested more than a dozen people, mostly young African-American male subjects, on charges related to a wide variety of criminal activities including but not limited to auto break-ins, narcotics-related charges, thefts and illegal weapons charges, Matthews reported during the Feb. 14 Kershaw County Council meeting.
