During a special called meeting Thursday, Kershaw County Council approved the KershawHealth Board of Trustees’ decision to draft a letter of intent concerning a deal between the county’s public healthcare system and a partnership comprised of Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn., and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Council voted unanimously, 6-0, with Councilman Jimmy Jones absent, in favor of a resolution giving KershawHealth board Chair Karen Eckford, interim CEO Terry Gunn and attorney David Summer the go-ahead to continue negotiations with Capella/MUSC. While specific details are yet to be disclosed, the deal would lease all KershawHealth real estate to Capella/MUSC, while selling all of its furniture, fixtures and equipment to the for-profit/academic partnership. Capella/MUSC would, essentially, take over all KershawHealth operations.
