Kershaw County Council will hold a special called meeting at 3 p.m. today for a single order of business: to cancel its next regular meeting, scheduled for June 25.
Council normally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
At its most recent meeting a week ago, council wrapped up its work on the Fiscal Year 2020 budget and millage ordinances, as well as an ordinance setting up a $29 fee for improved parcel to use as revenue for improved fire district services.
If all goes according to plan, the fee should only be used for the 2020 fiscal year so that a replacement fire district can be created for the 2021 fiscal year.
That district would use a higher millage rate to continue the fire service improvements, including adding full-time firefighters and fire station “hubs” in the Elgin and Cassatt areas.
The new fee, which will go into effect on July 1 along with the new budget and millage, will also assist in increasing volunteer firefighters’ “points” system, resulting in a 30 percent increase in compensation.
Council’s next regular meeting is schedule for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9.
