KCC passes first reading of redistricting ordinance

If Kershaw County Council kept its current district lines as they are now, it would be out of compliance with at least one section of the Voting Rights Act. That’s according to redistricting consultant Joel Opperman who spoke before council Tuesday as it considered both a resolution setting up its redistricting procedure and first reading, by title only, of an ordinance that will ultimately choose a new map of the six single-member districts. The county-wide chairman’s seat is considered at-large and, therefore, not affected by redistricting.
