After weeks of consideration, Kershaw County Council voted Tuesday to deny the Kershaw County School District’s (KCSD) request for a 4.7 millage increase, a move that would have generated about $500,000 annually for local schools. Third and final reading of the proposal triggered 17 county residents to voice their opinions on both sides of the issue. Some of the speakers even drew steady applause for their remarks, prompting Council Chairman Gene Wise to try to subdue those in attendance.
