KCC votes down rezoning for proposed Elgin subdivision

The largest of six lots that were proposed to be rezoned in order to facilitate the creation of a new residential subdivision at Watts Hill Road and Wildwood Lane is outlined in yellow on Kershaw County’s GIS mapping service. Kershaw County Council voted unanimously against the rezoning on second reading Tuesday night, with most councilmen saying they must take rapid growth in the West Wateree and its impacts on fire and public safety services, as well as schools and roads into consideration.
Kershaw County Council unanimously voted against approving second reading of an ordinance that would have rezoned six lots totaling approximately 86 acres from RD-2 (Rural Resource District) to R-15 (Residential, requiring lots of no less than 15,000 square feet) during its meeting Tuesday. The unanimous “no” vote may scuttle plans by Mabry Commercial Properties to create a new subdivision on the combined properties near the intersection of Watts Hill Road and Wildwood Lane in the Elgin area.
