Thanks to a $100,000 grant given to Access Kershaw and the Kershaw County Library (KCL) in December 2020 by the University of South Carolina (USC), Karina Vargas joined the library’s staff in March, becoming its first-ever social worker. In just the five months since then, Vargas has already had 286 “encounters” with people of up to an hour or more to provide guided assistance, resulting in connecting them with more than 1,200 resources throughout the county.
