Kershaw County Council honors Brook Benton, family and church
Benton - Sign and Church
A newly installed S.C. historical marker stands by the side of Lachicotte Road in front of the church. An installation ceremony took place April 30 featuring music and speeches from Benton’s family, Unity congregants and state and local officials. The sign outlines Benton’s life on one side and the church’s history on the other. (Martin L. Cahn/C-I)
During its May 10 meeting, Kershaw County Council honored legendary singer-songwriter Brook Benton, his family and the Lugoff church where he is buried. The proclamation came 10 days after a new historical marker was installed on April 30 outlining the religious, community and congregational history of Ephesus Church -- more recently known as Unity United Methodist Church -- including Benton, who was the son of one of its pastors, Willie Peay.
