Kershaw County will kick off a Lake Wateree Flood Study with a stakeholder meeting on Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Kershaw County Government Center, 515 Walnut St. The study will evaluate the regular 1 percent annual chance (i.e., 100-year) flood elevations and floodplain mapping along Lake Wateree. The study is being performed in response to questions and comments Kershaw and Fairfield counties have received regarding the accuracy of Federal Emergency Management Agency flood insurance rate maps used to regulate development in high flood hazard areas and establish flood insurance requirements and rates. Kershaw and Fairfield counties have jointly contracted with engineering firm ESP Associates P.A. to perform the study.
