Proposal of county police force emerges
Would take over most of sheriff's office duties

Should a county police department take over most of the duties of the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO)? That’s the question Kershaw County Council will take up Tuesday on first reading of an ordinance that would allow voters this November to consider creating a new county police department, consequently erasing most of current Sheriff Jim Matthews’ power. If a majority of county residents vote “yes” in favor of the referendum, the sheriff would retain a minimal level of power compared to his current role.
