Second reading on nuisance property ordinance today

Kershaw County Council will consider second reading of nuisance property ordinance during its meeting today at 5:30 p.m. Council passed first reading, in title only, of an ordinance that would authorize the county to abate rubbish, debris, junk and other materials that constitute a common public nuisance and affect the general health and welfare of the citizens of Kershaw County. The effort to address nuisance property issues is currently being led by Councilman Al Bozard, who said he became involved when a number of people in his district called to complain about certain properties in their neighborhoods. During that meeting, Bozard said the intent of such an ordinance is not to infringe on the rights of property owners and his goal is for council to ultimately strike a good balance between respecting private property rights and government regulation.
