USC biomass plant brings extra attention to Cassatt plan

A string of problems at the University of South Carolina (USC) biomass plant has drawn increased attention to the construction of a similar facility in Kershaw County. The proposed plant, to be located in Cassatt, is set for completion near the beginning of 2013 by Southeast Renewable Energy (SRE), an Alabama company founded in 2000. Reports of frequent shutdowns and potentially lethal accidents at the USC plant, in addition to a perceived misuse of public funds, has prompted local residents living near the planned Cassatt facility to amplify their concerns at Kershaw County Council meetings.
