Dr. Nelson to speak at Lugoff Garden Club

The Lugoff Garden Club welcomes and is excited about having Dr. John Nelson as their guest speaker for their first meeting of the 2013-2014 year.

Dr. John Nelson is the Curator of the A.C. Moore Herbarium with the University of South Carolina’s Department of Biological Sciences, where he is also a professor of biosystematics, floristics, and plant geography. Since he became the Curator in 1990, the herbarium has more than doubled its collections, and it remains one of the oldest and largest collections in the Southeast with more than 100,000 pressed plant specimens and a repository for nearly every botanical species found in South Carolina.

The Herbarium remains committed to public service through a formal offering of free plant identifications and a weekly "Mystery Plant" newspaper column. Dr. Nelson holds a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Florida State University, a Master’s degree in botany from Clemson University, and a Bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Nelson is also a featured guest on the Emmy Award-winning " Making It Grow!"which is a live, interactive call-in program produced by SCETV and Clemson University. Dr. Nelson tries to stump the "Making It 2Grow" panel" with a Mystery Plant.

The Lugoff Garden Club meets on the third Monday of each month - September 2013 to May 2014.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday evening, at the home of Mrs. John Henderson (Charlene) , Kings Grant Road, Lugoff, SC.
