Twenty-five years ago, near Barboursville, Va., stood the ruins of an octagonal house near the edge of a vineyard. Around the standing brick walls the landscape evoked the age of the house, reportedly designed by Thomas Jefferson. The foundation shrubs were 200-year-old boxwoods as tall as trees.
