South Carolina State Guard Commander Major General Thomas Mullikin invites all guardsmen and all South Carolinians to the 2016 Hurricane Hike 10K Race. The South Carolina State Guard will host the 2016 Hurricane Hike Saturday, Sept. 10 in Camden.
The hike weigh-in and registration will begin at 6:45 a.m. at the Camden City Arena located at 420 Broad Street, Camden; start time of the race is 8 a.m. This will be the S.C. State Guard’s 5th year holding the race which is certain to test each individual’s fitness and agility but is also a great time that brings many guardsmen, families and community members together, according to event organizers.
The Hurricane Hike 10K Race is not your typical race, Mullikin said.
“Each individual will be required to carry a 45 pound backpack throughout the entire race, as well as wear ACU boots and trousers, all proving to be a very physically challenging race,” he said.
According to Mullikin, these requirements are made to replicate and honor our military and the challenges they endure emotionally and physically on our behalf every time they are called upon.
Overall, the 2016 Hurricane Hike 10K Race is a family-friendly event. Adults and children are welcome to participate alongside their guardsmen and attend the lunch at Camden City Arena following the race.
“Family and community members’ participation is an amazing way to show support of the S.C. State Guard and encourage our guardsmen to the finish line,” Mullikin said.
The Hurricane Hike is a certified race course and chip timing will be used for scoring. The hike is being professionally managed by Strictly Running of Columbia and is being organized by the S.C. State Guard. The registration fee is $10 per person, which includes a t-shirt and post-hike BBQ. All proceeds benefit the S.C. State Guard.
