Line dance classes kick off Sept. 14

Line dance classes start Sept.14. Line dancing is a great stress reducer and emotional release as well as good exercise, providing much the same benefits as low-impact aerobics. Increase energy, improve strength and muscle tone. Age is no factor. And you can build your stamina while having fun. Come with a friend or spouse or come alone; you don’t need a partner for line dance.

The easy beginner class is offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Mondays. Beginner intermediate classes are 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Mondays. The cost is $4 per person per class. The instructor is Ann Segars, licensed by BMI-ASCAP, National Teachers of Line Dance. 

Shag Lessons

Shag lessons, instructed by Patty and Larry Blackmon, start Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Kershaw County Recreation Department. Junior classes, 6 p.m. for ages 16 to 20, four classes, $25 per person. Beginner classes, ages 21 and up, 7 p.m., six classes $50 per person. Intermediate classes, ages 21 and up, 8 p.m., four classes, $50 per person.


For anyone who hates to exercise, Zumba feels more like a Salsa party than a workout. Zumba is not difficult and anyone can and should experience it. It’s a Latin inspired cardio dance fitness class and incorporates many different dance styles and international music rhythms to provide one amazing high calorie burn workout. No dance skills are required to participate. Classes are created to apply for all fitness levels. 

Classes are Monday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the old armory building taught by a certified Zumba instructor, Brandy Mangum. The cost is $20 for once a week per month, $30 for twice a week per month or $5 drop in fee per class.

A class is also taught at the Bethune Recreation Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. by certified instructor Annie Gonzalez. The cost is $5 drop in fee per class or $25 for a pass which includes five classes with one free.

Senior fitness class

A group exercise class for ages 55 and older provides a fun variety of exercises to improve strength, flexibility, posture and balance, using a chair and a floor mat (optional).

All participants must be ambulatory and able to follow verbal cues in order to safely and effectively perform the exercises.

The instructor is Melia Campolong, certified senior fitness instructor. Classes are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The fee is $20 per person for the month. Classes are also offered at the Bethune Recreation Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $20 per month. Pre-registration is required.
