The board game 7 Wonders by Asmodee Games has won more gaming awards than any other game I know of. It is a simple card game but complex to master. Players represent leaders of ancient civilizations. The goal is to build a civilization that scores the most points by game end by gathering resources, building structures, raising a strong military and mastering commercial endeavors represented by cards.
Players start with a hand of seven cards, then keep a card and pass the rest on. They then select another card and pass the rest on until there is one card left to pass and it is discarded. Cards are played to build a unique civilization. Each civilization can build its own wonder of the world to score more points and benefits. The game is quick, fun and easy to understand. It is a must for every gamer's library.
Room 25 is a game about escaping a prison in a science-fiction world. Players start in a bare room with four doors on a 5-by-5 grid (25 rooms). Some doors lead to more rooms, deadly traps or dead ends. The goal is to find Room 25, the only way out. There are several play modes including solo, cooperative and team vs. team. A unique mechanic is that each turn, all players make a set of three preprogrammed moves and reveal them at the same time. Once the actions are set, a player must follow them out, even if it results in them being eliminated from the game.
In Kemet, players represent leaders of Egyptian armies in a fantasy world of battle, magic and mythical creatures. Each player deploys pyramid-shaped dice (in red, white and blue) to his or her home city and a set of troops to attack and defend. A variety of temples are scattered across the board and, when conquered, provide prayer points to the occupant. To win, a player must achieve a certain amount of victory points.
Being aggressive by attacking an opponent is one way to achieve quick victory points, but players have to win the battle. Prayer points are used to acquire power tiles that grant fantastic magical powers such as extra movement, attack or defense bonuses, and the introduction of terrifying fantasy creatures to the battlefield. Each magical creature is represented by a beautifully sculpted miniature. The unique battle system is done by playing cards and adding bonuses. Upgrading pyramids and acquiring certain power tiles also generates victory points. This is a game in the spirit of Risk but better in every way and much faster to play.
Imagine a dungeon labyrinth lies before the players filled with traps, treasures and enemies. To win the game, a player must maneuver his or her fantasy characters from one side of the dungeon to the other. But the opponents are trying to do the same thing from the opposite direction.
Dungeon Twister: The Card Game is a two-player game where the cards become different rooms in a fantasy dungeon. Each player selects fantasy characters with unique abilities for his or her team. The characters are plopped into the dungeon and the game begins. There are magical items and objects that players can acquire in the dungeon that help win the game. On a turn, a player chooses to move, collect items, twist a room, collect items or fight opponents. It's a very strategic game and requires careful planning. The card game is based on the popular board game of the same name.
