AMES, Iowa -- Seeing your child for the first time is an overwhelming experience normally, but one family had the added emotion of being reunited with one another when a soldier surprised his family in the hospital.

Sgt. John Vorrath was stationed in the Middle East when his daughter Charlotte was born in Ames, Iowa, according to WHOtv. His wife, Janae Vorrath, thought the two wouldn’t meet for at least six months, but was surprised when her husband showed up the day after the birth to meet their baby girl.

Sgt. Vorrath was able to watch the birth on an iPad where he was stationed, during which his commander granted his request of leave. He then traveled for 22 hours to sneak up on his wife, who was recovering in a local hospital.

The surprise was recorded on video, capturing the couple’s excitement at seeing each other, Sgt. Vorrath’s first moments with his daughter and later, a reuniting with his 2-year-old son.

“I was shocked and stunned,’’ Janae told TODAY.com about the surprise visit. “I’m not sure if I can put into words how special it was to share those first few days of our daughter’s life together, especially since we had prepared ourselves for him to not meet her until she was approximately six months old. But as her mom and his wife and in a very difficult time emotionally, it thrills my heart that he had the opportunity to meet her, hold her, kiss her, and that she’ll know the sound of his voice now.”
