Charles V.B. Cushman, Jr., age 85, of Camden, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at his summer home in Chadds Ford, PA., that he shared with his wife, Joanne Bahr Cushman. Charlie was born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 9, 1926, and spent his childhood in Upperville, Virginia. His entire adult life was spent in Camden. Charlie worked extensively in thoroughbred horse racing and training and he was very active in supporting the Kershaw County Hospital Foundation as well as the Camden equestrian community. Charlie not only rode in a Carolina Cup race back in his early days of riding but went on to train a horse that won the Carolina Cup. Charlie was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of Virginia.

Mr. Cushman was predeceased by his first wife Ida McDowell Cushman, also of Camden, and is survived by his two sons, Charles V.B. Cushman III, John L. Cushman and his wife Sandy, both of Camden, and his daughter, Anne Cushman Prettyman and her husband Jim, of Ooltewah, Tn.

In addition Mr. Cushman is survived by many grandchildren and their spouses; John Douglas and Brooke Nunn, Morgan Heath Nunn, Jonathan and Adriane Cushman Potter, Laura Haines Cushman, Caroline Clark Cushman, and one great grandchild, John Douglas Nunn IV. His wife, Joanne Bahr Cushman and her three children and six grandchildren: Gina and Patrick Finn, John and Elaine Bahr, Nancy and Anthony Kelly and grandchildren Emily, Liza and Jack Finn, Molly, Miller and Mack Bahr; four siblings; Carolyn Cushman Doughty, Rob Cushman, Hope Cushman Cisneros and Peter Bertschman. A brother, Phillip, predeceased him.

Burial will be private on Friday, August 5, 2011, followed by a church service at Grace Episcopal Church, Camden, S.C. at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kershaw Health Foundation, 1315 Roberts Street, Camden SC 29020.
