Charles Edgar George, 93, of Camden died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, in KershawHealth, Camden. Born in Slaton, Texas, he was the son of the late Carl Edgar and Myrtle Ethel Smith George.
Mr. George, formerly of Artesia, New Mexico moved to Camden with his wife to live with his daughter and son-in-law. Mr. George served in the US Army during World War II from 1944-1946. He returned back to the United States and married in 1949, in Texas and lived in Monahans, Texas, until he moved to Artesia in 1957, working for a pharmacy. He opened ABO Super Drug in Artesia in 1962 and retired in 1984 serving as pharmacist. He was very active in his church, First United Methodist Church of Artesia where he had served as a senior adult Sunday School teacher for 30 years and a lay minister. While serving in World War II, Mr. George was a member of the 78th Medical Base Depot Company and received the following ribbons and metals, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Metal, Victory Metal and Meritorious Unit Award.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Helen Margaret Phillips George of Camden, 5 children; Larry George and his wife Brenda of Arlington, VA, Phillip George and his wife Cathy of Amarillo, TX, Linda G. Van Dam and her husband Andy of Camden, SC, Carl George and his wife Judith of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, Mary George Reed of Kelso, Washington State, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Mr. George will be interred in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC, and a memorial service will be held in February 2013. The location and time will be announced.
