A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clara Koonts Richardson, 88, of Lexington, SC, will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 16, 2015 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. Rev. John Hallman will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in John Knox Hall. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Richardson’s memory to Palmetto Girls State, Inc., American Legion Auxiliary, Department of SC, 107-A Legion Plaza Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Clara Koonts Richardson passed away peacefully after a brief illness on February 11, 2015.  Clara was born on January 7, 1927 in Mount Airy, North Carolina to the late Daniel Emmett Koonts and Nannie Jones Koonts. She graduated from Montreat College in Brevard, North Carolina and Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, North Carolina with a degree in Home Economics.

Clara married the love of her life, Philip Eugene Richardson Sr., on June 24, 1948. Gene Richardson passed away in March, 2013. Clara was a devoted wife, mother to four children, and teaching assistant at Midway Elementary School.  In addition to enjoying her family, Clara was the past President of the South Carolina American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in 1988, a regular volunteer for Girl’s State, a volunteer for the VA Hospital Christmas Gift Shop, and loved cooking for the 55+ Club at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, South Carolina.

 Throughout her life Clara and Gene enjoyed attending Jaycee Conventions, SAFE Credit Union Events, and American Legion Conventions. Clara was a traveler and had visited all fifty states and many countries in Europe, but always made it home to play bridge with her friends. 

Survivors include her four children, Nancy (John) Medlin, Patsy (Brian) Cockfield, Phyllis (Fred) Price, and Phil Richardson.  Clara had ten grandchildren; John Medlin Jr., Andy Medlin, Christopher Medlin, Sara Cockfield Hall (Ryan), Amy Cockfield McKinney (Nate), Erin Cockfield Grall (Ross), Trey Price, Lauren Price Gillespie (Will), Emmett Richardson, and Annie Richardson. She was the loving great-grandmother to eight great-grandchildren; Grayson Hall, Henry Hall, Carlyn McKinney, Emery McKinney, Owen Grall, Ellie Grall, Addison Gillespie, and Evelyn Gillespie.  

Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Richardson was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Holladay Johnston Richardson.
