Dennis R. Blake-Command Sergeant Major (retired), 60, was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina on June 18, 1952.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years D. Gail Blake; daughter Melanie Morrison (Chris) and son Kevin Blake (Betsy); grandchildren, Creston, Olivia, Chesley and Wyatt; brother, Doyle Blake; sisters, Donna Young and Diane Blake, 5 nieces and 2 nephews; God-daughters; Summer Breymeyer Deason and Mandi Breymeyer.

He enlisted in the Army in January 1972 and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in the 2nd of the 504th Infantry Battalion. In July 1979 he served in Panama as the Instructor, Senior Instructor and Intelligence Sergeant for the Jungle Operations Training Center. He was selected for Drill Sergeant duty in July 1982 and successfully completed his tour at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In November 1984 he returned to the 82nd Airborne Division where he served as Platoon Sergeant in the 2nd of the 505th Infantry Battalion. In April 1986 he served as First Sergeant for the 19th Replacement Detachment in the 18th Airborne Corp, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In April 1989 he was reassigned to Germany where he continued duty as first Sergeant with the "Big Red One" the 1st Infantry Division until it’s deactivation in July 1991. He was then reassigned to Fort Polk, Louisiana where be served as Command Sergeant Major for 5th of the 6th Infantry, 5th Infantry Division. The 5th Infantry Division was relocated to Fort Hood, Texas and re-designated as 2nd Armored Division where he served as Command Sergeant Major for the 3rd of the 41st Infantry until his retirement in June of 1993. After retirement he worked in Customer Service, marketing and planning for several national trucking companies. He was an avid wood worker and gardener.

Memorial service will be held Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.

Family requests that in honor of Dennis’ belief in "all things simple" that casual attire be worn to his memorial. Burial will be held Monday September 10, 2012 at 11:00AM at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
