A Celebration of Life Service for Doctor Donnie Ashmore Powell, 73, of Columbia, was held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. The family received friends following the service. Dr. Powell died Thursday, November 17, 2011. Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of the late Russell Kermit and Mignon Cox Powell. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree and Masters of Art Degree from the University of South Carolina. He received a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University and had a year fellowship at Florida State University.
Dr. Powell retired after 41 years from the Dorn VA Medical Center where he was Director of Neuroscience Lab and served as Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development. He was Adjutive Professor at the University of South Carolina and mentored many students in the field of Neuroscience.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Trisha Burke Powell; sons, Dr. D. Langston Powell (Marilyn Gartley) of Columbia, and Ashley Powell (Margaret) of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Palmyra Powell (Steve Merlin) of Columbia, S.C. and Stephanie Powell-Barilla (Paul) of Columbia, S.C.; step-daughters, Tammy Watson (Chris) of Aiken, S.C. and Teresa Powers (Robbie) of Lugoff; brothers, Kenneth Powell (Wilma) and Ronnie Powell; sister, Barbara Lemay (Bob); grandchildren, Evelyn Powell, Langston Barilla, Logan Barilla, Zoe Barilla, Louis Watson, Mary Margaret Watson, Natalie Watson, Gabrielle Powers, and Allen Powers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Palmyra Ramsey Langston and second wife, Dr. Shirley Buchanan.
