Robert Sharp Watkins, M.D., 87, of Camden, South Carolina, died peacefully Wednesday, June 1, 2011 with family at his side. Born in Greenville, SC in 1923, he was the son of the late Wister Royden and Mary Fisher Watkins. He graduated from Dreher High School and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Dr. Watkins received his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, which he attended through the United States Army. He interned with Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Dr. Watkins practiced family medicine in Ridgeway, SC before becoming the Medical Director of DuPont of Camden, a position he held proudly for more than 40 years. He was a Life Member of The Kershaw County Medical Society and an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry.

Dr. Watkins was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend Althea "Appie" Speed Watkins. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Watkins Fagg and her husband, John Anderson Fagg, MD, of Winston-Salem, NC; his sons, Robert Sharp Watkins, Jr. and his wife Kimberly Taylor Watkins of Columbia, SC, and David Royden Watkins of Aiken, SC, and daughter-in-law Gayle Creech Watkins of Johnston, SC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John Anderson Fagg, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Shields Fagg of Charlotte, NC, Caroline Fagg Tucker and her husband Hamer Gibson Tucker of Camden, SC, Benjamin Blake Watkins of Norfolk, VA, Wales Remington Watkins and Eva Noel Watkins both of Columbia, SC, and David Royden Watkins, Jr. of Johnston, SC; great granddaughter, Elizabeth "Bess" Anderson Tucker of Camden, SC and great grandson, Robert Watkins Fagg of Charlotte, NC.

Bob was a kind, compassionate and loving family man. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures. His favorite and cherished past times included strolling the South Carolina beaches, planting seeds in his garden, playing with his grandchildren, spoiling his cats, and dancing with his beloved Appie.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Dr. Watkins will be held Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Grace Episcopal Church in Camden with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Rev. Michael Bullock will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at 171 Chesnut Street, Camden.
