A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Stephen L. Wangensteen of Boykin, SC, will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, December 8, 2014 at Swift Creek Church in Boykin. Rev. Dr. Chip Summers will officiate. Memorials may be made in Dr. Wangensteen’s memory to Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Dr. Stephen L. Wangensteen, husband of Lita Lindley Wangensteen, died Monday, December 1, 2014. He was born in Minneapolis, MN, the son of the late Dr. Owen and Sarah D. Wangensteen. Dr. Wangensteen was a US Army veteran officer and graduated from Harvard Medical School at the top of his class. He did his residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York City. He worked at the University of Virginia where he taught and practiced surgery and became a full professor at the age of 35. Dr. Wangensteen served as Chief of Surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson for 11 years and later went to the University of South Florida in Tampa to become Chief of Surgery. He retired in Boykin, SC.

Besides his wife, Dr. Wangensteen is survived by his daughter, Christine Eklund (William) of Tucson, AZ; sons, Stephen A. Wangensteen of Richmond, VA and Philip Wangensteen of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren, Blake Eklund, Madison Wangensteen, Sierra & Owen Wangensteen; and his beloved four legged friends, Gracie and Rosie.

Besides his parents, Dr. Wangensteen is predeceased by his son, William H. Wangensteen and his sister, Mary Brink.
