Graveside funeral services for Joseph Edward "Ed" Hoffman, 90, of Camden, were held Sunday, February 20, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Quaker Cemetery in Camden, SC. Rev. Ed Griggs officiated. Memorials may be made in Mr. Hoffman’s memory to Middendorf Baptist Church, 2202 Middendorf Church Road, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Hoffman, widower of Frances H. Hoffman after 54 years of marriage, died Friday February 18, 2011. Born in Chesterfield County on November 10, 1920, he was the son of the late Ulious Grant Hoffman and Ina Bullard Hoffman. Ed retired from both the Seaboard Coastline Railroad and the Country Club of North Carolina. He was an avid golfer in his prime, and was a member of the Elks Club in Southern Pines. He was blessed with many friends- his fellow golfers, his neighbors, and his co-workers, and he loved the Middenforf Community where he was raised and the family and friends that he cherished there. He and his wife Frances made their home in Camden until 1967, when they transferred with the railroad to Southern Pines, NC. Ed returned to Camden after his wife passed away in 2007, and was a resident of Pinedale Residential Center in Camden until his hospitalization.

He is survived by his daughter, Janie Hoffman Mathis and her husband, Reese of Bishopville; his beloved grandchildren, Mason Reese "Chip" Mathis, III and his wife, Kristie Fleming of Charleston, Jacob Edward Mathis of Bishopville and Dr. Amanda Mathis of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews and their families; Carroll Hoffman (Jerry) of Darlington, Paschal Hoffman (Gerrie), Gwen Hoffman McManus (Kerry), Renee Hoffman McDaniel, and Ann Newsome Russ of Hartsville, and Lynn Newsome, Tom High (Betsy) of Wilson, NC, Jim High of Pinehurst, NC, Dee High (Connie) of Durham, NC, Lou Ann Eatmon (Rick) of Wilson, NC and Molly High Boone (Larry) of Durham, NC. He was predeceased by his brothers, Carroll James Hoffman and Roy Hoffman; sister, Ethel Hoffman Newsome and a niece Hilda Hoffman Crowley.
