Elaine Long, 86, of Camden, SC, passed away August 1, 2018. She was born May 29, 1932, in Allentown, Pa., to Arthur Angstadt and Jennie Ackerman Angstadt. Elaine and her late husband, Coast Guard Captain Kenneth Long, were high school sweethearts. They were married for 57 years before Kenneth passed away in 2012. As a U.S. Coast Guard family, Elaine, Ken and their family were stationed around the country, including Norfolk, Va.; Groton, Conn.; San Leandro, Calif.; Gretna, La.; Cleveland, Ohio; Springfield, Va.; Governors Island, N.Y.; and Elizabeth City, N.C. After Kenneth’s retirement, they settled in Camden, which they called home for 25 years.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Elaine also developed a strong network of friends in the area who had helped each other through both good and bad times and her family is thankful for their support.
Elaine was passionate about gardening and very involved as a Kershaw County Master Gardener. Over the years, she undertook many roles in the organization from sharing expertise during phone duty to serving several terms as president. Her contributions included the yearly calendar, seminars, symposiums, documenting the history of the organization, and more. She delighted in taking trips with her friends to surrounding areas in search of those unusual plants for her ever-expanding gardens.
She is survived by her two sons, Alan and wife, Terri, of North Royalton, Ohio, and Wayne and wife, My, of Austin, Texas; as well as her grandchildren, Nikki and husband, Chris, Brian and fiancée, Sarah, and Matt. She was also blessed with a great-grandchild, Mackenzie.
