A funeral service honoring the life of Col. H. Eugene Kessler, US Army (Ret), will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 4, 2013 at Still Hopes Episcopal Home, 1 Still Hopes Drive, W. Columbia, SC 29269. Father Johnnie Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in Quaker Cemetery with the Rev. James Barnhill officiating.

Herman Eugene Kessler, husband of Mary Boykin Kessler, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Born in Manhattan, NY on April 26, 1923, he was the son of the late Anna Sims Kessler and Herman Eugene Kessler. Eugene graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard University class of 1944 and received his Masters from Harvard Business School in 1950. He was a US Army Colonel, retired after 30 years of service and was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He taught at the US army War College from 1967 to 1970 and taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1981 to 1990. Eugene lived in Camden, SC from 1988 to 2005 and in West Columbia, SC from 2005 to the present.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Boykin Kessler; his son, Eugene Burroughs Kessler (Susan) of Brentwood, TN; and his three grandchildren, Bradley Kessler, Zackery Kessler and Sarah Kessler.

Besides his parents, Eugene was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Brisbane Kessler and sister, Betty Bock.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
