Gena Jo Fant Rabon passed away on July 31, 2014 after a very brief and unexpected illness. Born in Pickens, she was the eldest daughter of JC and Margaret Fant. She spent her early years in Winnsboro, where she graduated from Mt. Zion Institute. Gena also graduated from Mars Hill College and Furman University where she met her future husband. She was married to Roland O. Rabon for 56 years.
Gena worked as a kindergarten director; an elementary teacher, a social worker for Department of Social Services at the county and state level. She worked in child protective services and adult protective services and retired from the State Office.
Gena was devoted to her faith, family, community, and gardening. She was a Master Gardener, a member of the Lugoff Garden Club, the Red Hat Society-Plum Crazy Chapter, Lakeview Baptist Church and active with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. She had been a precinct manager for the Kershaw County Election Commission for many years. Gena served on the Board of Trustees for Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood for ten years, being the first woman to serve as the Chairman of the Board. She spent her life doing for others.
Gena was most dedicated to her thirteen grandchildren, staying involved in all of their activities. She was an avid sports fan when her grandchildren were involved. Gena attended swim meets, track meets, football, basketball, and baseball games, soccer, wrestling, and volleyball matches, dance and music performances. She was the happiest when her grandchildren were with her or she was texting them. Gena was an incredible grandmother and she will be greatly missed.
Gena is survived by her husband, Roland, four children, thirteen grandchildren and two sisters, Peggy Fant and Nancy Boykin of Camden. Her children are Neil Rabon (Susan) of Greenville, Keith Rabon (Parrish) of Sumter, Ann Hough (Tony) and Lynn Matthews (Dan) of Camden. Her grandchildren are Spencer and Jess Rabon, JC Hough, Pierce Rabon, Roland Matthews, Will Hough, Austin Rabon, Margaret Rabon, Ross Hough, Granger Rabon, Smith Williams, Mason Williams, Meg Matthews, and Kathryn Rabon. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. All who knew her will remember her with gratitude for her constant love and abiding example of a life well lived.
Special thanks to the care givers who have been so kind to her and to Agape Hospice for their special services and attention to our family over the past few weeks.
