A graveside memorial service to celebrate the life of Gretchen Watts Roepke, 58, of Columbia, SC, will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, September 7, 2015 in Quaker Cemetery. Reverend Stephen Jordan of Rowan Presbyterian Church will conduct the service. Memorials may be made in Gretchen’s memory to Greyhound Crossroads, 314 Sample Road, Greenwood, SC 29649.

Gretchen, wife of Neil Roepke, died Wednesday, September 2, 2015. She was born in Camden, the daughter of the late Luther James Watts and Margretta Little Watts. Gretchen was the grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Lee Little of Camden. Gretchen is survived by her husband; daughter, Katie Busbee of Greenville; and her sister, Gretta Watts of Camden, SC.

After completing her education Gretchen traveled and worked abroad in England, Sweden, and parts of the U.S. for several years before returning to Camden and eventually settling in Columbia.

Gretchen had a life-long love for animals and was passionate about her greyhounds. She spent much of her time promoting the adoption of retired racing greyhounds and will be missed by her favorite sidekick Sid.

Gretchen had a deep sense of kindness that radiated to those around her. She served on numerous charitable and benevolence committees and boards over the years. Her most personally satisfying achievement in these endeavors was teaching adults to read. She was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Columbia Literacy Council.

Gretchen’s greatest joy was her role as a Mom and she excelled at the opportunity. Nothing pleased her more than spending time with her daughter Katie, and she beamed with pride at the young lady Katie has become.

Gretchen worked as the Marketing Director for Mar-Mac Wire, Inc. and the family would like to thank Mar-Mac Wire and the Martin family for their benevolence during her illness.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
