Helen Tindal Jenkins passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Columbia. She was born April 11, 1918 in Columbia and grew up in Camden. Her parents were Marie Madden Tindal Nicholson and Hughey Tindal, Sr. Her stepfather was Dr. George W. Nicholson.
Helen was a graduate of Camden High School in 1935. Following high school, she graduated from Winthrop College in 1939 where she served as President of the Honorary Psychology Society-Alpha Psi Zeta (38-39). During World War II, she worked at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant in Baltimore, Maryland as a draftsperson and studied at Johns Hopkins University, taking courses in Basic Engineering. She taught school at Camden High School in Kershaw County and at Windsor Elementary and Bradley Elementary in Richland County.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, having transferred from Eastminster Presbyterian where she had been a member for over 45 years. She was a member of the Honeysuckle Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 6.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Richard F. Jenkins, Sr., and granddaughter, Kendall Marie Wooten. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Marynell J. Wooten (Oscar, Jr); son Richard F Jenkins, Jr (Cicely); her grandchildren, Jean Marie Jenkins Fortson (Gage), Jennifer Wooten Starnes (Kevin), Helen Jenkins Conroy (Edward); and her great grandchildren, Gage Fortson, Jr., Grace Fortson, Haley Starnes, Jake Conroy, Marie Conroy, Kendall Jane Starnes, and Henry Conroy who were the light of her life.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers including Irene, Athen, Daisy, Wanda and the Rice Estate.
A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation was held Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
