A memorial service for Irene Mangum Gettys will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, SC, conducted by Rev. John Hallman. The family will receive friends following the service in John Knox Hall.

Irene Mangum Gettys, 96, of Lugoff, SC, died on March 29, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Nicholas Purdy Gettys, Jr.; her parents, Annie Bryd and William Thomas Mangum; two grandchildren, Caroline Emily Gettys and John Lathan Gettys; and seven siblings. Mrs. Gettys is survived by her two sons, Nicholas Purdy Gettys, III (Cheryl) of Montgomery, AL and John Lathan Gettys (Peggy) of Lugoff, SC; grandchildren, Nicholas Purdy Gettys, IV (Leslie), Rainey Gettys Scrocco (Jerry) of Wilmington, NC, Andrew Mangum Gettys of Auburn, AL and Meghan Gettys Avant (Brooks) of Greenville, NC; three great-grandchildren and one sister, Byrd Fash (Vernon).

Mrs. Gettys was born January 1, 1919 in Kershaw County, SC. She was a graduate and class valedictorian of Jefferson High School, Jefferson, SC. She also received a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Education degree from the University of SC.

Mrs. Gettys was a professional educator having spent 46 years in service to Kershaw County Schools. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in a rural, one room schoolhouse in Lugoff. Mrs. Gettys progressed to positions of increased responsibility that included Principal, Coordinator of Elementary School Instruction and at the time of her retirement in 1984, Director of Instruction for all Kershaw County Schools.

Mrs. Gettys was a long-time volunteer at Kershaw Health and was a member and past president of the Executive Board of the Hospital Auxiliary of Kershaw County. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the Junior Welfare League of Camden. Two academic scholarships, awarded annually, have been established in Mrs. Gettys’ honor-the Kershaw Health Auxiliary Board Scholarship for students entering the health care field and the Lugoff Optimist Club Scholarship for deserving seniors from Lugoff. She was the recipient of the Lugoff Sertoma Club’s Outstanding Citizen for Service to Mankind award and the Camden Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellow award. Mrs. Gettys was an active member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, having served as Elder, Senior Choir member, Fifty-five Plus Club officer and Sunday School teacher. She also was awarded an honorary life membership by Bethesda’s Women of the Church.

Mrs. Gettys leaves a very large circle of family and friends who will remember her for her humor, kindness, wisdom, generosity and wise counsel. The family will also receive friends at her home of more than 60 years at the Gettys home in Lugoff.
