A memorial service to celebrate the life of James Alan Underwood, 87, of Camden, SC, will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, 1112 Fair Street in Camden. Burial will be in Moultrie, GA. Memorials may be made in Alan’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.

James Alan Underwood died April 7, 2014 at KershawHealth following a brief illness. He was born on November 29, 1926 in Bradenton, FL and grew up in Moultrie, GA. He was the son of the late Irene Perry Underwood and Sidney J. Underwood. Alan’s first job was at age 10, when he began working part time in a tobacco barn. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944, was stationed in San Francisco and was honorably discharged in 1946. Alan attended Georgia Tech, where he received both a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Industrial Engineering.

Alan was employed by DuPont from the early 1950’s until the mid 1980’s. Except for brief assignments in Virginia and Delaware, Alan spent his entire career at DuPont’s Camden facility. Following retirement, Alan enjoyed playing golf with friends at Camden Country Club. Alan was a lifelong member of the Baptist faith and maintained a relationship with Trinity Baptist Church in Moultrie, GA, until his death.

Alan is survived by his nieces, Beth Underwood Spratt of Charlotte, NC and Connie Underwood McDowell of Greenville, SC; and by his nephew, Terry Underwood of Lambertville, NJ. Besides his parents, Alan was predeceased by his brothers, William A. Underwood and Perry Carroll Underwood.

The family expressed its appreciation to Dr. Jack F. Scheuer, Jr. and the staff of Sentinel Health Partners, and to the healthcare providers at KershawHealth, for the care they provided to Alan.
