Martha Jeanette Gaffos, of Camden, passed away quietly in her sleep Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at age 92. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held Friday, January 20, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Reverend Father Michael A. Platanis will preside over the service to celebrate her life.
Mrs. Gaffos was born near Wilmington, NC on Stag Park Plantation on November 14, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Martha Jordan. She had nine brothers and sisters.
She was a gifted pianist and was a debater for four years on the Burgaw High School Debate team, winning the state championship her senior year. She received her cosmetology degree from Southern School of Beauty and Culture in Norfolk, Virginia.
She met her husband, Nicholas Gaffos, from Chios, Greece at Carolina Beach. They were married for 58 years. They owned and managed the Seven Seas Cafe in Camden for nearly forty years. They lived in the Cunningham house which they later donated to Historic Camden in 1971.
Jeanette was a woman of keen intellect and wisdom. She had a kind and loving personality and radiated warmth and sunshine to her family and people with whom she came in contact! She is survived by her son, Dr. Staci N. Gaffos, of Columbia and daughter, Virginia Gaffos Jeffcoat (Rev. Bill Jeffcoat) of Salisbury, North Carolina.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Jamey Jones, Nikki Corl, (Michael Corl), Electra Gaffos Ariail (Mills Ariail), Nicholas Gaffos, and Katherine Gaffos Furman (Jody Furman); great grandchildren include Ashlyn and Jonathan Jones, Ava and Alli Corl, Mills and Nicholas Ariail, and Eva Lane Furman.
Mrs. Gaffos affectionately known as "Yia Yia" was a great matriarch who constantly prayed for everyone. She was an eternal optimist and a woman of deep faith.
The family is deeply appreciative to her caregivers, Lynn Twitty and Mary Branham, whose devoted care for Mrs. Gaffos was unsurpassed.
