Graveside service to celebrate the life of John Lawrence Haynes, Jr., 97, of Camden was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015 in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. John Hallman, III officiated. Memorials may be made in Mr. Haynes’ memory to Carolina Jazz Society, P. O. Box 50806, Columbia, SC 29250.

Mr. Haynes died June 9, 2015. He was born in Clifton Forge, VA, and was preceded in death by his parents, John Lawrence Haynes and Laura Strong Haynes; wife of sixty years and the mother of his children, Barbara Campbell Haynes, and his second wife, Mary Lee Hester; three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include his children; Gloria Sams (Tom) of Horseshoe Bay, TX, Larry Haynes (Dianne) of Waxhaw, NC, Constance Haynes of Camden, SC; a sister, Sandra Haynes of Clifton Forge, VA; six grandchildren; Jamie Duffy (Sarah) of Georgetown, TX, Bess Schmitt (Dave) of Camden, SC, John Duffy (Barbie) of Keller, TX, Brent Haynes (Lisa) of Waxhaw, NC, Andy Owens of Camden, SC and Damon Haynes (Edlyn) of Durham, NC. He has six great grandchildren.

Mr. Haynes, a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, was retired from DuPont. He was a jazz musician, playing bass with many big bands and jazz combos. He was a charter member of the Carolina Jazz Society House Band, and performed locally in The Ancient Age Society Jazz Band. Many in the Camden area will remember John from his performances at The Paddock/Old Armory Steakhouse.
