Born 12/23/1941 in Christiansburg, VA and raised in Pulaski, VA. She is survived by her mother Lena Thompson Spencer, currently living in Boones Mill, VA. Preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Elkins Spencer. Survived by her husband of 50 plus years, James Conway Cheely; daughter, Lynette Marie Conto of Camden, SC; son Jeffrey Patrick Cheely of High Point, NC, son-in-law Kevin Conto; granddaughter Sydney Rae Conto, daughter-in-law Beatrice Anne Cheely and one brother, K. Byron Spencer of Boones Mill, VA.

Karen Cheely was a graduate of Radford College where she finished four years of study in three years. She taught at Prince George High School in Virginia for four years prior to raising her family.

Mrs. Cheely was a lifelong horse enthusiast, having participated in horse shows, field trials on horseback, fox hunting, boarding and training horses, and teaching riding. She was an active member of the Camden Hunt for a number of years where she participated as a hunt whip.

Upon her husband’s retirement, they sold their horse farm to do some international traveling and took up competitive tennis in the Camden and Columbia areas.

In lieu of any flowers, donations should be made to the Camden Hunt Hounds, P.O. Box 2285, Camden SC 29020. Mrs. Cheely has respectfully requested to be cremated and there will be a memorial service and celebration of life party at the"‘Beechwood of Camden", 100 Knights Hill Road, Camden, SC on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. All of her friends are invited to share memories and show their appreciation of the life God has bestowed upon us.
