A graveside service to celebrate the life of Olive Louise Evans Gettys, 96, of West Columbia, SC, will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 9, 2013 in Gettys Cemetery, Lugoff, SC. The Rev. John Hallman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be sent to the Gettys Cemetery Fund, 1620 Kellytown Road, Lugoff, SC 29078.

Olive Louise Evans Gettys died Saturday, November 2, 2013 in Columbia, SC. Mrs. Gettys was born December 15, 1916, the daughter of the late James William and Ollie Burden Evans in south Texas. She was a 1942 graduate of the University of Texas College of Nursing and served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Mrs. Gettys met Benjamin Wiley Gettys while in the Army, and they were married on June 8, 1944 in Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Gettys had a long career as a public health nurse, first in St. Louis County, Missouri, then in DeKalb County, Georgia. She retired in 1980 from nursing with the Oklahoma State Health Department and moved to Lugoff, SC. She was a member of Rowan Presbyterian Church, Lugoff, SC.

In 1996 she moved to West Columbia to Laurel Crest Retirement Community, where she ran the gift shop for 18 years. She was an avid reader and a beloved member of her community.

Mrs. Gettys is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin Wiley Gettys, Jr., and Belinda Peters of Lugoff, SC; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Anne and Kevin Kosmicki of Atlanta, GA; and great-granddaughters, Zoe and Olive Kosmicki, of Atlanta, GA.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Gettys was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her sister, Jane; and her brother, James.
