CAMDEN -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Maria Gabriela Chacon Blake, 91, of Camden, SC will be held at 11:00 AM, today, October 11, 2016 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Rev. Brian Thomas will officiate. Maria will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made the Thiel-Meyer Pet Adoption Center, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020.
Maria Gabriela Chacon Blake, passed away peacefully with family by her side on October 7, 2016 at Morningside Assisted Living, a caring and loving facility, in Camden, SC. She was born in Madrid, Spain to Dona Maria Martinez-Hombre Chacon and Juan Chacon on September 29,1925, and lived through the Spanish Civil War. She had an older brother, Juan, whose death preceded her own. She was predeceased by her loving husband, William Gardner Blake, an American World War II Navy veteran. They were married for 64 years, and together they traveled the world. She was a loving mother survived by her 6 children, Maria Hazel Blake of Carbondale, CO, William Chacon Blake of Camden, SC, John Gardner Blake of Rowley, MA, Thomas Carlos Blake of Sanbornville, NH, Stephen Paul Blake of Green Spring Cove, FL and Isabel Blake Darwin of Cambridge, MA, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. In Spain, she is survived by her cousins, Maruja Chacon, Elena Martinez-Hombre and her sister-in-law, Marily Villanueva, widow of her deceased brother, Juan.
To anyone who knew Maribel, they would tell you she was a beautiful, sweet, caring and gracious lady with a charming Spanish accent. In her 50’s she attended college, and in her 80’s she taught Spanish to kindergartners. She loved to cook for her family, write poetry and spontaneously sing songs in her native tongue. She was devoted to her faith and attended NorthStar Church of Columbia, SC.
