Marie Kelly Branham, 90, of Elgin, SC, died Friday, May 25, 2012. Born in Tookiedoo, SC on September 4, 1921, she was a daughter of the late John Mannes Kelly and Gazell Abbott Kelly. Marie was a beloved fixture in the Elgin community, owning and operating Branham’s Grocery for 31 years, working alongside her husband on the family cotton and corn farm, and serving as nurse for anyone in need in the area. She was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church, where memorials may be made in Marie’s memory at PO Box 66, Elgin, SC 29045.
Survivors include her sons, James and his wife, Margie, Floyd and his wife, Belle, and Larry Branham; grandchildren, Timothy and wife, Angie, Thurmond and wife, Shannon, Scott and wife, Brooke, Greg and wife, Nancy, all of Elgin; as well as six great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Grover Branham; sister, Belva White; and her siblings lost in childhood, Eloise, Inez, and Ben.
The funeral service for Mrs. Branham will be held 3 o’clock, Sunday, May 27th, at Smyrna United Methodist Church, 16 Smyrna Rd, Elgin, with The Rev. Joanne Lockard-Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock, Saturday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
