Mary Elizabeth McMaster Ayer, 93, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Nunda, NY on April 7, 1922, daughter of the late Bert McMaster and Harriett Democker McMaster. Her husband, Oliver E. Ayer preceded her in death.

Mary graduated from Filmore High School, Filmore, NY, in 1939, and married Oliver on April 19, 1941.

She was a DuPont wife, moving sixteen times in twenty-eight years; starting in Niagara Falls, NY and retiring with her husband in Wilmington, in 1972.

During those twenty-eight years, she worked a myriad of jobs including salesperson, real estate agent, and as a Fred Astaire dance instructor.

She was a very competitive person including checkers and scrabble with her son, and later with golf and bridge. Few weeks would go by without reading her name in the Wilmington paper for winning local golf and bridge tournaments. She was a member of Cape Fear Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. During World War II she worked manufacturing ball bearings to support the war effort.

Surviving are her son, Mitchell O. Ayer (Gloria); grandchildren, Kristin E. Stokes, and David M. Ayer (Veronica); great-grandchildren, Hunter and Garland Stokes and Josh and Beck Ayer; and special friends, Bob Blake, Francis and Susan Dabney, and Elaine Umstetter.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, NC, with the Rev. Jonathan C. Watson officiating.
