A graveside service to celebrate the life of Mary Vance Thompson, 85, of Liberty Hill, SC, will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20, 2014 in Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. Rev. Gene Ghent will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary’s memory to Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church’s Lakeside Day Camp 2014 P.O. Box 170 Liberty Hill, SC 29074 and Kershaw Health Hospice P.O. Box 7003 Camden, SC 29021-7003.

Mary Vance Thompson, widow of John Anderson Thompson, Sr, died Sunday, May 18, 2014. She was born in Columbia, SC, the daughter of the late Annie May Smarr and Frank Gray Vance. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC and a long time member of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church and was a graduate of Columbia College in Christian Education. She served as the youth director at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC and at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. In 1979, she helped found the Montessori School of Camden serving first as Assistant Classroom Director, then Extended Day Coordinator, and finally as Head of School, retiring in 1991.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Vance Thompson Berlin (Tim) of Boone, NC and Christine "Cricket" Thompson Butler of Whitefish, MT; sons, John Anderson Thompson, Jr. of Liberty Hill, SC and Frank Vance Thompson of Alexandria, VA; grandsons, John Anderson Thompson III (Mary Katherine), James Kornegay Thompson (Addie Bunn), Timothy Boone Berlin (Rachael Bunn), Marshall Reese Butler and Grayson James Butler; and great-grandsons Ian Knox Berlin, Samuel Gage Berlin and John Anderson Thompson IV.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
