A funeral service to celebrate the life of Melvin Eugene Byrd, 89, of Camden, SC, was held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Rev’s Gene Stokes, David Robinson and James Atkinson officiated. Burial was in Quaker Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Memorials may be made in Melvin’s memory to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1643 McRae Road, Camden, SC 29020.

Melvin Byrd, husband of Queen Dease Byrd, died Thursday, February 25, 2016. On February 21st, the Byrds celebrated 68 years of marriage. Melvin was born in Kershaw, SC, the son of the late Charlie Wells Byrd and Lizzie Morgan Byrd. He was a member of the Adult Men’s Bible Class, Abney Lodge #211 and an honorary member of Kershaw Lodge 29. Melvin was also a member of the York Rite Bodies and the Leslie Zemp Order of the Eastern Star 111. He was a service technician with Sears Roebuck and also worked for the Colony Inn for 24 years.

Besides his wife, Melvin is survived by his daughter, Lydia B. Stokes (Pete) of Hartsville, SC; son, Randy E. Byrd (Brenda) of Lugoff, SC; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his brother, Johnnie Byrd of Pageland, SC.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
