The funeral service for Miriam McCaskill Sowell Gardner, 88, of Columbia, will be held at 4 o’clock today at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia with Dr. Kenn Busbee officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 3 o’clock. Interment will follow in Scotch Cemetery, Bethune, SC. The family requests memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Ln, Columbia, SC 29210; to the Alzheimer’s Association, SC Chapter, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Ste 100, West Columbia, SC 29169; or to Tidewater Hospice, c/o Tidewater Foundation, 10 Buckingham Plantation Dr, Ste A, Bluffton, SC 29910.

Mrs. Gardner was called home Friday, August 1, 2014. Born in Kershaw County she was a daughter of the late Daniel C. and Mary Elliott McCaskill. She was a member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Gardner retired from Kershaw County Vocational Center, now known as ATEC in Camden, SC, where she taught industrial sewing. She was a very talented seamstress who took great pride in her work, making everything from hats and stuffed animals to beautiful evening and bridal gowns. She loved the Lord, reading the Bible, singing hymns, doing for others, playing bingo, and being with people. Her sweet spirit, loving kindness, and patience will long be remembered by family and friends.

Miriam is survived by and will be greatly missed by her loving daughter and caregiver, Cynthia Sowell Bush of Columbia; daughters, Mary Gardner, Theresa Gardner;  a son, Jim Gardner; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Dee Lamar of Winter Park, FL. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert N. Sowell, and J. Troy Gardner; a sister Eunice M. Compton; and a brother, Thomas C. McCaskill.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sterling House Assisted Living, and Tidewater Hospice for their excellent Care.
