Molly Shoaf Brady, 71, died on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 after an extended illness. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late David Harold Shoaf, Jr. and Alice Penry Shoaf. She attended Columbia area schools and graduated from A.C. Flora High School. Her education continued at both Guilford College and the University of South Carolina.
As an accomplished artist, she won several international awards for graphic art design while serving as the Classified Art Director for The State Newspaper. One of her drawings is held in the University Archives in the art department at USC. She also taught art at Timmerman School, and later used her remarkable talents in other ways.
A huge Broadway fan, she enjoyed musical theatre on a grand scale. She performed in several Lexington County Arts Association productions, including Mame (“Mother Burnside” with gusto!), The Electric 80s, and The Fabulous Forties. She was a multifaceted woman, whose hobbies included writing short stories and biographical works and poetry, reading, living and loving “Survivor,” creating Christmas crafts, playing bridge, and making jewelry. Her necklaces are spectacular, and she was known to give them away to anyone who desired or expressed interest.
Ms. Brady had a genuine, forgiving, and faithful heart. Her greatest and fiercest loves were her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Penry Shoaf Brady Gustafson and her husband Todd Richard Gustafson of Camden, SC; niece, Molly Kate Jordan Herrmann and her husband James Christopher Herrmann of Columbia, SC; children Jordan Emma Armfield Herrmann and Matthew Christopher Herrmann; brother-in-law, William Dell Jordan Jr. (Bill); cousin Texie Penry Shelby and her husband Brad Shelby of Charlotte, NC. Her grandchildren are John William Ripon Pope IV (William), Andrew James Gustafson, and Margaret Frances Gustafson. Special members of the family include Thomas Bernard Morgan III of Columbia, SC and Joyce Vanshrauss of Vernon, Connecticut. Ms. Brady was predeceased by her son Michael Troy Brady (2004) and her sister Anne Armfield Shoaf Jordan (2012).
