Mrs. Rebecca Whitaker Jacobs Jefferson, a daughter of the late Leroy and Carrie Belton Whitaker and wife of the late Peter Jefferson, was born on June 4, 1923, in Camden, South Carolina. She departed this earthly life on August 18, 2011, at Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, DC.

Rebecca was converted and baptized at an early age at Zion Hill AME Zion Church. After moving back to Camden from Jacksonville, Florida in the early 1960's to be caretaker for her mother, she rejoined Zion Hill. She remained an active member in the church until she married Mr. Peter Jefferson and moved to Beaufort, South Carolina. After her husband’s death in 1999, she returned to Camden and Zion Hill, where she worked faithfully (deaconess, missionary, choir and usher) until she became in in May of this year.

One of Rebecca’s favorite things to do was "Flea Marketing." She would pack her Dodge with merchandise during the week and head for Highway 1 early on Friday mornings. It was a simple pleasure that brought her much joy.

Rebecca was preceded in death by five siblings - Daisy Wheeler, Edward Belton, Isaac Whitaker (her twin), Leroy Whitaker and Jesse Whitaker.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Leslie Whitaker of Upper Marlboro, MD; one sister, Maude Blanche Miller of East Hartford, CT; one brother, Tony Jenkins of Jacksonville, FL; one sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law, one grandson; two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
