Mr. Richard Allen Pannell Jr., 78, of Thomson, GA, died January 14, 2011, after a brief illness.

Mr. Pannell was born on May 25, 1932, to the late Richard Allen Pannell Sr. and Adele Kellum Pannell in Wrightsboro, GA, and was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County. Mr. Pannell answered the call of duty and proudly served  his country in the Korean War. Although he earned his Juris Doctor, he was an entrepreneur in spirit and heart. A successful businessman, building and real estate developer, Mr. Pannell was also an avid pilot and a keen collector and restorer of vintage automobiles. Mr. Pannell was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Thomson and a member of the JOY Sunday School Class. He served on the board of directors of the McDfuffie County Hospital for many years.

A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Annette Montgomery Pannell; his daughter and son-in-law, Paula P. Scarborough (Eugene) of Camden, SC; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Allen Pannell III (Victoria) of Marietta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Laurn P. True (William) of Hilton Head Island, SC; and three grandchildren, Allison and Lindsay Pannell, and Adam True. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. Pannell (Joyce) of Atlanta; and two sisters and their husbands, Catherine Williamson (Water) of Atlanta and Ruth Cole (Malcolm) of Forsyth, GA.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 18, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Thomson with the Reverend John F. Barnes IV and the Reverend Beverly Casstevens officiating. Burial will be immediately following the memorial service at Westview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the residence or at Curtis Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
