A memorial service to celebrate the life of Silvia Szekeres Jonkoff, 83, formerly of Camden, will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Rev. John L. Hallman, III will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Jonkoff’s memory to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020 or the American Diabetes Association of SC, Middleburg Drive, Ste. 205, Columbia, SC 29204.
Mrs. Jonkoff, widow of the late Imre Mirko Jonkoff, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Chapel Grove Inn nursing home in Heath, Ohio. She was born in Budapest, Hungary the daughter of the late Jozsef and Anna Baliko Szekeres. In 1956 Mrs. Jonkoff, her husband, and 2 year old child escaped the Soviet invasion of Hungary and eventually immigrated to the United States. They became proud American citizens in 1966 and active residents of Camden. She had been an active participant in the Camden Players, the Camden Garden Club, she volunteered at Kershaw County Memorial Hospital and was an active member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. In March of this year Mrs. Jonkoff’s health compelled her to join her son in Heath, Ohio, where she spent her last days in the Chapel Grove Inn nursing home.
Surviving is her son, Viktor Jonkoff of Heath, Ohio; 3 granddaughters, Kelley and Valerie Jonkoff, and Stephanie Jonkoff Alex.
