Vernice Hattie  Duren Belton, 93, of Camden, SC, was born on October 21, 1923, to the late Wayman and Amelia Drakeford Duren, in Kershaw County, SC.  She was the 11th child of 15 children.  Affectionately known as “Aunt Vernice,” she was called to eternal rest on February 17, 2017, in Elizabeth City, NC, where she lived with her daughter.

She graduated for Kershaw County Schools and later from cosmetology school.  Soon after, she opened a beauty salon.  She took pride in her work and enjoyed working long hours for 50+ years.  She was also a civil rights advocate for many years.  She enjoyed fishing, reading, quilting and making jewelry.  She was joined in holy matrimony to Sam Belton of Camden.

Left to cherish her cherish and celebrate her life, her daughters, Carolyn Cooke and Deborah Boone; sister, Alberta Drakeford; three grandchildren, Diana Goldberg, Tasha Cooke and Aryjana Askew; four great-grandchildren, Destini, Ivory, President and Ja’Nese and one great-great grandchild, Cailyn.

Funeral services for Mrs. Belton will be conducted on Saturday, February 25, at 11 AM, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Camden, SC.
